Signs Your Characters Are Stalking You

As we delve into our stories, our setting, our world-building, we sometimes find ourselves discovering things related to our stories when we're not even searching for them.

  1. You find books that are perfect for inspiring your world-building.
  2. People are mentioning something on social media that would work well in your novel.
  3. While doing research for a blog post, you find a link on the Wikipedia page that, lo and behold, takes you to something cool and totally related to your manuscript.
  4. While listening to a song, the lyrics inspire a new legend for your fantasy setting.
  5. You just found the perfect dog breed for your characters to keep on their farm.
  6. You see images that are similar to some of your dragon species.
  7. You log onto Facebook, and a page you follow happens to post something related to your stories.
  8. You have an insanely long to-do list, much of it compiled by the characters themselves.
  9. Just when you had an idea to do something, things appear that correspond both to those ideas and to your stories.
  10. The characters are surrounding you now.
  11. There's no escape.
  12. They just decided to hold you hostage, and you're going to be world-building and story-telling here for the rest of your life.
