Graham Crackers

Graham crackers. A well-known food item which many people enjoy. Yet, as a child, I wasn't impressed with them. I mean, they weren't anything exciting. I even associated them with disappointment to some extent.

Occasionally, the teacher would announce we were going to have a snack. Sounds great, right? Maybe it would be candy, or cookies. Maybe the teacher would bring out chips, or popcorn. I, along with the other short people, would wait for the snack to be bought it out. And it would be... graham crackers. I mean, it's right up there with fruit snacks or boxes of raisins, both of which I was just as unenthused with.

Then there was Christmas. Gingerbread houses are supposed to be a classic holiday treat, right? "We're going to make gingerbread houses." the teacher said. Of course, being a naive child, I imagined actual gingerbread, blissfully unaware that adults are liars who crush little kids' dreams.

The evil grown-up would pull out the building materials, and... graham crackers. Again. We would try to form walls with the frosting also supplied, which was basically useless for holding the crackers together. The adult would watch us struggle fruitlessly for a while, and apologize when they saw that there was no way we would ever make a gingerbread graham cracker house out of it.
But the most annoying thing? In the following years, some grown-up would say again, "We'll make gingerbread houses!" And then they would pull out the graham crackers and lame frosting again. And we would try to build a house and fail. Again. Grown-ups just don't learn.

Granted, some people enjoy graham crackers. Dipping them in milk, or putting honey on them. They're also a key ingredient in smores, a treat which many people enjoy, and they make good pie crusts. But as a child, they were that annoying snack food I could have done without.
Come to think of it, I haven't eaten a graham cracker in ages. Maybe I should try them again. I might end up liking them more. Nah...
