Checking Social Media

I've made a fair number of observations while scrolling through my feed on various social media websites. Some are funny, others weird. Below are some examples of this.

  1. You find yourself automatically hitting 'like' on posts you just read, then going, "Wait, why did I do that? I was just thinking that I disagreed with this post."
  2. You want to 'like' a post simply because of some random cool-looking thing. The message could be about anything, you just want to hit 'like' because you saw a cat in the image.
  3. You see an interesting post, and decide to check their profile page to see what else this person posted. Hours later, you're in 2017, and they're probably going to get a notification of "Meowmocha liked 187 of your posts".
  4. You read a post that's so incredibly stupid and inaccurate, you just laugh at it for a while. And then, "Yeah, you've lost my respect now, bye."
  5. You return to Discord and feel a momentary urge to hit a 'like' button in response to someone's avatar.
  6. "Let's see what my data says, just out of curiosity." Then you discover that the site guessed your gender wrong, thinks you're interested in people you've never heard of and men's jeans (what), and read a lot of posts in Haitian Creole (when have you ever seen a post in that language?).
  7. As you look at the 'other languages' entry in your data for the umpteenth time, you're amazed that it still hasn't figured out Celtic languages.
  8. Some random stranger sends you a friend request on Facebook. No idea who you are, dude, or how you even found me.
  9. You scroll through your feed, and wonder if some people have absolutely nothing in their lives except their political opinions, because that's literally all they post.
  10. You wonder how intelligent social media algorithms must be, if you've marked a topic as 'not interested' a thousand times, and it's still showing you junk on that topic.
  11. Sometimes you think about your browsing history, and wonder what sort of targeted ads you might get if you didn't have an adblocking extension on your browser.
