Horrifying Foods

I watched a video where a guy tried some odd foods, and aside from the toast sandwich, they were all awful. There was a bizarre recipe involving cranberry sauce, fruit-flavored gelatin, and mayonnaise, which he described as looking like dog food. And you know, it kind of did. Upon trying the nightmarish thing, he found it so unspeakably disgusting that he rushed off-camera, presumably to make retching noises.

Anyway, I thought I'd make a blog post about foods that sound unappealing. Whether it's crazy videos, odd images floating around on social media, or things we see at the supermarket, we come across some strange or unappealing foods sometimes.

S'mores Ramen

While at the store, my brother reported seeing this bizarre thing. S'mores-flavored instant ramen, of all things. I mean, who looks at s'mores, and then ramen, and thinks, "wouldn't it be great if we combined these?" There some things that, no matter how good they might be on their own, probably shouldn't be combined.

Donut Prune Salad

I don't recall where I saw this originally, but to me, it doesn't seem that appealing. Essentially, it's stewed prunes and cottage cheese on donuts. They're also placed on a leaf of lettuce, because it's all about that presentation. Personally, I think the donut would be a lot better on its own. And... wait a second, 'serve with mayonnaise'? This is giving me flashbacks to the cranberry, gelatin, and mayo abomination I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Recipe for donut prune salad- Here's a crisp, fresh salad that will cause any 'meat and potatoes' man to change his mind. Stew 4 prunes for each person. Pit the prunes and stuff with cottage cheese. Place two donuts on a lettuce leaf, fill the donut centers with cottage cheese, then top each donut with a stuffed prune. Place two whole pitted prunes beside the donuts. Serve with mayonnaise.

I also love how it says the salad will 'cause any meat and potatoes man to change his mind'. Change his mind about what? Ever eating food again? The woman he married, because she served him this? It's also kind of funny how this is advertised as a salad, because those are generally considered to be light and healthy, and you would think a big sugary donut would cancel that out.

Weird Soda Flavors

Let's take a moment to talk about some of the more unusual flavors that soda comes in. While at a candy store some time back, I saw a lot of different soda varieties, some of them normal and some of them... not so much. Apple pie soda, I could live with. But butter? Butter is a flavoring, not something you eat on its own. Well, unless you're a toddler, a greedy animal, or some weirdo in a TV commercial.

Store display with bottles of soda in flavors like black olive, ranch dressing, enchilada, mustard, and sweet corn.

Some other bizarre flavors I saw included black olive, ranch dressing, and mustard. And there are far more odd soda flavors besides what I saw in that shop. In the past, garlic, onion, dirt, grass, tree bark, pickle, and turkey and gravy. Things that either seem like odd flavors to make a beverage out of, or just sound gross in general.
I think the most horrifying, though, is white fungus bird's nest soda. Bird's nest is an ingredient used in some Asian dishes, and comes from the hardened saliva that swiftlets make their nests from. Chunks of white fungus, often used in sweet dishes in Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine, are also added to this soda. Maybe these are common fare in some parts of the world, but personally, I have no desire to consume bird spit.

Buffalo Blue Cheese Ice Cream

Someone in an online writing group mentioned this recipe, and it really makes you wonder who came up with it. Someone really bored, or really deranged? I mean, an ice cream recipe that contains things like sour cream and blue cheese dressing. If you like, you even add crumbled blue cheese. I mean, isn't ice cream supposed to be sweet and delicious?

Cup of cursed ice cream with a piece of chicken in it

The webpage suggests eating it with buffalo wings or fruit, but I just... why? I don't see the point in making some bizarre ice cream flavor to eat with chicken or berries, when I could be making some sweet, delicious flavor to be eaten with chocolate, caramel, chopped nuts, whipped cream... (drool) I mean, why not just make a dipping sauce for those foods. Why must you ruin the good name of ice cream like this.

Anyway, that concludes today's blog post. I mean, unless I come across more weird or disgusting-sounding foods. If you want to see more food-related horrors, though, you can always check out the somewhat related post, Foods I'm Reluctant to Eat. (Although the last item on that list doesn't really count.)
