Near-Death Experiences

During life, we sometimes find ourselves in potentially dangerous situations. Maybe it was just bad luck, or maybe we brought it upon ourselves through poor judgment. Below is a compilation of these stories.

The Cursed Vacation

Someone was travelling with their mother, and it turned out to be a perilous adventure. One evening, while they were staying at a hotel, they heard some people making a great commotion. There was yelling, stomping, and banging, and she was tempted to pound on the ceiling and shout at them to shut up.
The following day, police officers knocked on the door of their hotel room. There was an incident next door, and they wanted to know if the two of them had heard any disturbances. Later on, she saw the officers in the hallway, talking about guns with two men in suits. The officers told them not to touch anything, and they went into the neighboring room.
Another evening, a group of teenagers got onto the train they were on. The kids went to the front, and the train didn't move for a while. Then the conductor came over the intercom, saying that the train would be delayed due to unruly youth who refused to pay for their tickets, and they had to wait for the police to arrive. The teens were yelling and cursing, wanting to get off the train, but the doors had been locked. She and her mother heard glass break at one point. When the teenagers were finally let off, they stood outside, screaming and throwing things at the train.

Maybe these are assassination attempts on me. If you don't hear from me by tonight, then they've...

Later during their vacation, they returned to their hotel room to find a horrible odor. They thought perhaps the bulb in the fridge was burning, so they unplugged it and opened a window. The smell didn't seem to be dissipating, and her mother decided to Google it. That was when they realized it was actually an ammonia gas leak from the fridge. They hauled the fridge into the hallway, told the hotel owners to take it outside, then headed down to the beach to let the room air out.

We're lucky we looked it up instead of ignoring it, or we probably would have died.

Murderous Mini-Fridge

Someone was trying to haul their belongings out of their college dorm at the end of the semester. She couldn't find anyone to help, and as an added bonus, the building had no elevator. So, she had to take everything down three flights of stairs. This proved problematic, especially when it came time to transport the mini-fridge. She was carefully moving it down the steps, one at a time. At one point, she leaned back too far, became unbalanced because of the heavy load, and found herself falling backwards with the fridge following. She doesn't remember how she evaded death or dismemberment, but since she was able to relay the story, I guess she survived.

Leaf This Place

At a college campus, seemingly healthy oak tree suddenly fell in the middle of a trail, almost crushing a few students, who managed to run out of harm's way in time. It turned out the trunk was rotted, which resulted in it finally breaking. As the tree had fallen on the stairway leading off the trail, they had to climb over it to get back. Some of the students joked that the tree was knocked over by a ghost rumored to haunt the area.

We Be Stupid

My friend and I went out somewhere, and were taking a taxi both ways. When we were ready to come home, we called the taxi company. After a while, a van pulled up with two guys in it. They asked if we were waiting for a taxi. I found it kind of weird, since I didn't see it marked as a taxi. But they seemed to know we were waiting for one.
Anyway, my friend didn't seem to find it odd, and we got into the back seat. We told the driver where to go, and he headed off while the other man in the passenger seat exuded toxic clouds of body spray. (What's with some guys and excessive use of body spray?) The driver said he'd just calculate the rate by the odometer. The car didn't even have that gadget that measures the distance and cost of the ride.
We arrived at our destination (to my relief) and paid the driver before returning to the house. My friend wondered aloud if perhaps the company had a shortage of vehicles, since it didn't seem to be a designated taxi. The whole thing was kind of strange, really. In fact, thinking about it, it would be all too easy for some random people to guess we were waiting for a ride, claim to be a taxi, then claim us for their next victims. And we both agreed it wasn't our wisest decision.

A Relaxing Walk

A friend of mine was invited to go for a walk. Her friend said it wasn't too difficult of a trail. Upon discovering that parts of it were incredibly steep, and the path was narrow in places, she reflected that she would never trust those words from him again.
They reached the end of their trek, and rested briefly by a lovely waterfall. Then they began heading back down the steep trail. Partway there, my friend lost her footing and found herself falling. There was a rock wall on one side of her, and the other side of the path went straight down.
Not wanting to plummet off a cliff, her spirit haunting the mountain until the world's end, she tried to fall in the opposite direction. Her body slammed into the unyielding stone, badly injuring her ankle. She had to limp the rest of the way, and it was swollen and all the colors of the rainbow the following morning. She later went to the doctor and discovered she broke a bone in her foot. But you know, she didn't fall down the mountain, at least.

Archie Comics- injured and dizzy Mr Weatherbee. 'Have an accident?' 'No thanks, I just had one.'

Almost Roadkill

I decided to go for a walk one day, and was strolling down a street in a mobile home park when I heard a loud engine. I looked behind me to see a car barreling down the road, so I moved to the side. As they zoomed past and left the park, I found myself pessimistically wondering if they cared about running me over had I not noticed them coming up behind me.
