Advantages of Being a Shape-Shifter

Being able to change form has plenty of advantages. Whether it's turning into an animal, looking like a different person, or becoming an inanimate object, such an ability would have plenty of perks. This can apply in real life, or to those fantasy characters trying to find the lost dragon princess. Let's explore some of this awesomeness, shall we?

Evasion and Defense

Oh no, here comes your mother, and you know that look in her eye. She's searching for one of her offspring to give a list of chores to. You'll be cleaning for the rest of your life if she spots you. Quickly, you do your best impersonation of the family cat. Your mother enters the room, sees no one save Gandalf the Grey Tabby, then turns and leaves. She doesn't notice the whiskered wizard breathe a sigh of relief as she heads upstairs.

Hopefully you'll use your abilities for better things than slacking on household duties, but you get the idea. For a more constructive example, maybe you're being held hostage. Until you transformed and sneaked past your captors, that is. Or perhaps the school bully is seeking to steal your lunch money, or some dangerous person is after you because you stole the blueprints for the death ray they plan to build. They won't find you, because they don't recognize you. It's amazing what turning into a pigeon will do. Who could possibly find you among the many city birds?
Better yet, let's say someone's in great peril. A deranged man has an innocent person cornered, and is threatening them. Then, out of nowhere, a massive brown bear appears, growling and rearing up. The man turns pale, drops his pocket knife, and makes a run for it. He's not going to question what a grizzly is doing in the middle of New York. He's too busy worrying that he's about to become dinner.

Spying

An important person has given you a task. They're suspicious of someone, and want you to find out what that person is up to. So what do you do? Why, become a fly on the wall. Literally. Or, if you can change your human appearance, simply change your face and pretend to be on their side. You could find out what's really going on. Was Bobby's death a coincidence, or a cover-up?
Transformation could also come in handy for police work. You can sneak up on a criminal in an unassuming form, then revert just before pinning them to the wall and slapping the cuffs on them.

Fun

But it's not just about practicality. Can you imagine the fun you'd have, the things you could do, the places you could explore? You could experience things that people only dream of. You can soar high in the sky, run as fast as a cheetah or galloping horse. As an owl, you'd have night vision, and see faraway objects with incredible clarity. You could dive deep underwater, staying submerged for long periods while in the form of a seal.

And let's face it, many of us dreamed about being an animal when we were children. It would make playing pretend so much more interesting, adding a degree of realism that otherwise couldn't be obtained.

Custom Appearance

In the 'Harry Potter' series, Tonks had all the luck. She would decide she wanted a change, and a moment later, her hair would be pink, or she would have a different face. Imagine doing that whenever you wanted. You wouldn't have to get haircuts, and dyeing it costs nothing. You could look however you pleased. As an added bonus, with the ability to morph, you could fit into any clothing. Makes shopping much easier, especially when two medium-sized shirts aren't really the same size at all.
Another advantage is that you'll always be ready for Halloween. Or cosplay. People will marvel at how realistic your costumes are. Little do they know that your wig, makeup, and contacts are actually real.
Besides, think of the jokes you can make. "Wow, that person looks just like me." "Don't you think I bear a resemblance to that bird?" "Ugh, I look like garbage today." (transforms into candy wrapper) Like Tonks, you can also entertain people by making faces.

Advantages of shape-shifting, transforming.

Usefulness and Convenience

Aside from evading danger and sneaking up on criminals you plan to arrest, shape-shifting has many other uses. For example, imagine what you could do with those animal senses. That cool raptor vision can be handy for locating people and places. The keen nose of a dog, the strength of a gorilla, and other abilities can come in handy.
And just imagine the possibilities if you could transform into inanimate objects. Perhaps your friend is a swordmaster, but lost their weapon. Now enemies are attacking, and both of you have little defense. Until you transform into a sword, that is. Your friend picks up the blade and fights of the attackers. Both of you are safe, and can resume your quest to rescue the princess.

Ultimate powermove is having a sword on you, so if your friend is killed, you revert to human form and finish them off.

By turning into something else, you could also make travelling easier. You could fit into small hiding places, or turn into an object and be carried around. Why walk when you can lie around in the form of an unassuming spade?
It would also make rush hour so much better. While everyone else is stuck in traffic, you're flying over the freeway to get to and from work. It's also useful when you want to reach the restaurant now, and you're at risk of eating the dashboard while you wait for the longest traffic light in the world. Or when you chose the worst day to buy Christmas gifts, and everybody's shopping at the same time. You don't have to pay for gas, either, or worry about breaking down.

Shape-shifting has lots of cool benefits. But what about the potential problems? Tune in next week on your rabbit ear TV, when we discuss the potential disadvantages of transformation.
