Overrated Things

Some things just aren't as great as the hype surrounding them might suggest. Like, why is this is so popular? It's not all that. Seriously.

Play-Doh

The children's modelling clay we all know from our childhood. Fun, moldable lumps of... stench.

Green Play-Doh

Sure, the concept of playing with clay, shaping it into different things, is nice. But Play-Doh, and off-brands of kids' modelling clay, also had an unpleasant odor. I never played with it much, because I hated the smell. And even more annoying, the smell stays on your hands, persistent even after you've washed them. Repeatedly.

Football

In essence, a bunch of guys with helmets and giant shoulder pads go onto a field, then run around, tackling each other and generally trying to kill each other, all in pursuit of some funny-looking ball. Great way to get hurt, if you ask me.
Of course, there's also touch football and flag football, which eliminates a lot of the traumatic brain injuries and torn ligaments. Still doesn't change the fact that it's just running back and forth on a field. I don't even understand the rules of football, so when we had to do football in P.E., often I just followed the herd. We'll just pretend I had a clue what's going on.

Antisocial is the New Edgy

My friend recently mentioned that it annoys her when people make a big deal of being 'antisocial', as though it's somehow cool to be a total loner and eschew social interaction. In an ironic twist, sometimes these same people complain about how they don't really have any friends.

Star Trek meme- Spock, Vulcan. 'I find that highly... illogical.'

On a similar vein, I find some of the memes about introversion rather exasperating. They make it sound like, "We don't need people ever. What's with you weird extroverts, needing actual social interaction? We're fine living in complete solitude and isolation forever!" Even introverts get lonely, folks. Quit exaggerating things to the point of being completely unrealistic.
There's a difference between not being as outgoing and talkative as others, and acting like you're some antisocial robot. Socializing is important; it's pretty much a basic human need.

Manual Food Choppers

When my mother and aunt were younger, they saw an interesting product that was supposed to make chopping foods easier and quicker. They bought it for their mom, thinking it would be a big help to her.
The reality, however, was a tad different. The manual choppers didn't work that well. Rather than things easily going through and being sliced, it required a great deal of effort to basically force the food through the blades, mangling said food in the process.
At one place where my brother worked as a chef, they had a similar gadget in the kitchen, and he had the same issue. In essence, these 'convenience' items are really just a pain in the rear.

NutriChopper- Just squeeze and chop!

Certain Trends

If I could go back in time, I'd probably abuse this power by preventing the concept of twerking from being invented, and maybe preventing certain songs from existing too. (Goodbye, 'Gangnam Style'. I won't miss you.)
Then there's the stuff that gets talked about so much, you're sick of it without ever trying it. I've never played 'Angry Birds', but between the advertising campaign and everybody talking about it, I got tired of the game.

Diamonds

The diamond industry is monopolized by greedy people who charge exorbitant prices for a few chunks of carbon. And really, diamonds aren't as rare as their price suggests. But again, the industry is a monopoly. They can charge as much money as they want. And there's lot of a similar-looking gemstones that are more affordable. Ultimately, commercialism has convinced the public that diamonds are more awesome, way more important, than they really are.

Politics

And the unpopular opinion of the day is: I hate politics. I don't like politicians. I avoid political posts on social media.
Ultimately, it seems that every politician is corrupt. Everyone has awful ideas, makes false promises, or is just a horrible person. And political campaigns are basically just mudraking. Bob claims that Frank is evil and plans to build unsafe nuclear power plants that will likely blow up and poison everyone. But hold on, Frank is saying that Bob wants to pass a bill that takes away everyone's rights and makes it legal to stab your neighbor in the heart for sneezing too loud!

Kid: What's the matter, Dad? Man: I just feel like the world is getting dumber.'
Excerpt of comic by Lunarbaboon.

And the sad truth is, it's not just the candidates who are pushing people down on the playground and knocking over their sandcastles. People make opinions on things, and if anyone's beliefs conflict with theirs, they automatically conclude said person is a complete idiot. "I'm right and you're wrong! You think Gwenwyn Bloodletter is a good candidate? Well then, you're a doo-doo head! Everyone knows Adolf Hitler is the way to go!" Everyone's spouting their opinions and getting into arguments, and no one's actually listening to what the others have to say. They only want to trade insults, start flame wars, and be as toxic as they can.

Are there any things that you think are overrated? Let me know in the comments. And be sure to check out my other blog post, about underrated things.

  1. I've played Angry Birds and enjoyed, but I agree the game got annoying after awhile, especially after it got two movies (only the first of which I seen that's just okay)! :/
