Reasons to Be Jealous of Your Characters

Let's face it, sometimes your characters just lead awesome lives. Meanwhile, you're about as thrilling as dry toast in comparison. Even the most minor characters are more interesting than you, the dry toast writer. We often find that we envy our characters, who are shooting arrows with uncanny accuracy, and riding off into the sunset on a dragon. Today's post is about those characters we so dearly want to be, and the reasons we long to trade places with them.

  1. They're elves with telepathic abilities and cool-looking pointed ears.
  2. One of them has a super-awesome purple cloak that you envy.
  3. Their best friend is a dragon.
  4. They are a dragon.
  5. They can play an instrument, and sing beautifully. Meanwhile, your singing makes people want to stab their eardrums repeatedly with a knife.
  6. They have traits you admire, such as wisdom or bravery. Just look at that character, unafraid to speak her mind, taking charge and getting stuff done. And look, she's so awesome she can even make that incredibly stubborn character see some sense!
  7. They speak multiple languages, whereas you're a boring monolingual.
  8. They get to travel a lot and have cool adventures.
  9. They can shapeshift into a animal. Who wouldn't want to be a falcon or a kittycat?
    Peregrine Falcon
  10. They live in beautiful places, and you wish dearly you were there.
  11. That epic flame-red hair. It is perfection.
  12. The lovely voice one of your characters has.
  13. The adorable relationship dynamic between that one married couple. It is so soft and sweet and pure and... (heart melts)
  14. They get to hang out with some of your favorite characters. Who doesn't want to chat or goof around with some of these people?
  15. They're in a world populated by elves, dragons, gryphons, and other awesome things.
